Loreto Sportshall Competition
The building is sited along the north south-axis of the existing basketball courts. The basketball courts have been relocated to the western edge of the site with 26 no. car parking spaces in between. The running track has been positioned immediately to the north of the entrance to the Sports Hall. A diagonal route from the school to the Sports Hall entrance is proposed along the existing circulation route from the school to the playing fields.
The Hall is entered through a double height entrance lobby. The kitchenette adjoins the entrance area and public toilets are to the right. On the left, on the route to the sports hall, are the changing rooms. All four changing rooms can be accessed independently from the pitch for maximum flexibility. Staff changing facilities are opposite the pupils’ changing rooms. Two large store rooms serve the sports hall to the north with one accessible on the western facade. Due to the economical design it has been possible to provide both the original 34m x 27m hall and a performance space. The performance space is at the opposite end of the hall to the hall’s entrance. To the rear of the performance space an equipment store is provided with direct access to the playing fields and on the pitch side of the performance space is provided the office and first aid room, also directly accessible from the playing fields.
The hall is lit by a band of curtain walling on the eastern facade at floor level giving panoramic views of the sea. In addition a series of north lights have been provided to facilitate even lighting for sports. It is proposed that electronically operated blinds could black out the north lights and curtains could black out the floor level windows for performances.
The studio and fitness room are at first floor level, accessed via stairs and lift and both have a clear 4m floor to ceiling height. The fitness room enjoys 4m high floor to ceiling panoramic views of the sea. It is proposed to clad the northern and eastern facades in “Kingspan Woodtherm” panels and to leave the hidden southern and western facades as unadorned fair-faced concrete.
