House Extension, Delgany
The proposed L-shaped extension is located between the existing cottage on Mill Road and a retaining wall to Kilcoole Road. The design rises from one storey at the cottage to two storeys at the retaining wall to take advantage of the existing terrain. The courtyard typology works within the confines of the site, with minimal impact on the existing cottage. The ground floor level of the extension and the south-facing patio is dropped 1.5m lower than the existing dwelling. This reduces the height and mass of the proposal, minimising the impact on adjoining properties.
Due to the nature of the site a courtyard is introduced into the design with the kitchen, living area and bedroom opening onto the sheltered external space. The courtyard provides natural light to the internal spaces and also provides space for dining andenjoying the south-easterly sun. The ground fl oor bedroom overlooks a small garden to the south of the proposal. Planning permission for this scheme was granted by Bord Pleanala in September 2013. Construction is due to start mid-2014.
